PECASE to Walid Gellad
Walid Gellad, MD, MPH, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor awarded by the federal government to science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their research careers. Dr. Gellad’s research focuses on developing more effective prescribing practices for physicians and Veterans and improving the way the VA health care system functions—in terms of better access to medications and safer prescribing practices. He is also a nationally recognized authority on prescription drug pricing and patient medication adherence.
The PECASE award is an addition to previous national recognition of Dr. Gellad’s outstanding career accomplishments. For example, in June 2019, Dr. Gellad was one of six VA HSR&D investigators invited to present his research on dual opioid use at the annual VA Research Event on Capitol Hill; the audience for this event includes members of Congress, Veterans, and the VA Chief Research & Development Officer. Dr. Gellad’s HSR&D project on dual use of opioid medications by Veterans led to the establishment of a data sharing agreement between VA and CMS to strengthen safety surveillance for medications issued to Veterans (i.e., VA will be able to monitor prescriptions issued outside the VA through Medicare Part D).
