Susan L. Zickmund, PhD

Research Interests:

Dr. Zickmund serves as a health services researcher, mentor, and Co-Director of the Methods Core for the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP). She also collaborates with her Partnered, Impact-Oriented Research Program colleagues to improve patient experiences with VA health care and patient satisfaction.  Dr.  Zickmund’s background is in qualitative textual criticism and is the recipient of a VA career development award on doctor-patient communication with Veterans diagnosed with hepatitis C. She has extensive experience as a PI on projects, including racial barriers to treatment for Veterans with hepatitis C and racial and ethnic disparities in satisfaction with VA care. In addition to her content expertise, she now specializes in the theory and practice of mixed qualitative-quantitative research methods, and has given national workshops and VA Cyber Seminars on this topic. She has also developed an expertise in the use of qualitative methods in the context of bioinformatics, which she developed though her work with the VA Consortium for Health Informatics Research (CHIR). She is a member of the HIV-HCV QUERI Steering Committee, leads the VA HSR&D Mixed Methods Methodology CyberSeminar Series, and is currently directing the qualitative analysis for the Heart Failure Provider Network that is part of the Chronic Heart Failure QUERI.
