Profile

Thomas R. Radomski, MD, MS, is a CHERP COIN investigator and Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh, where he is also a Core Faculty member at the Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing.

Dr. Radomski has dedicated his career to improving the quality, value, and sustainability of health care. As a practicing general internist and health services researcher, his work focuses on understanding and reducing low-value medical care, which includes tests and treatments that provide patients little to no benefit, result in unnecessary costs, and may cause harm. His research employs both quantitative and qualitative methods and leverages real-world healthcare data, including large administrative datasets, to examine the use, costs, and outcomes associated with the delivery of low-value medical care.

He has a special interest in developing and implementing patient-centered approaches to reduce low-value prescribing. He has a pending patent for EVOLV-Rx (Evaluating Opportunities to Decrease Low-Value Prescribing), a validated tool he developed to help clinicians, health systems, and payers identify and reduce low-value prescribing among older adults. He is currently the Principal Investigator on a VA Merit Award to study the effectiveness and implementation of an EVOLV-Rx-based intervention to reduce low-value prescribing among Veterans in VA nursing homes. He has also partnered with Humana to apply EVOLV-Rx to study low-value prescribing among their Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.  

His research has been published in journals such as JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, and the Annals of Internal Medicine. He also received several awards for research and patient care, including the Award for Excellence in Clinician Investigation from the Society of General Internal Medicine Mid-Atlantic Region, the Distinguished Alumnus Award in Clinical Research from Pitt’s Institute for Clinical Research Education, and was named a Top Physician Under 40 by the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Radomski is deeply committed to training the next generation of clinician-investigators. As Associate Director of the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) at the University of Pittsburgh, he leads several local and national training programs, including the NIH-funded ENRICH Virtual Resource Center, which supports early-career investigators from complementary and integrative health institutions in developing rigorous and impactful research. He also serves as the Principal Investigator on Pitt’s Clinical and Translational Science Pre- and Post-Doctoral TL1 training grant.

Apart from his research, Dr. Radomski maintains an active outpatient General Internal Medicine practice and supervises residents and medical students on the inpatient general medicine wards. He is also active within the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), having served on the National Council as Chair of the Board of Regional Leaders and as co-chair of the 2025 National SGIM Meeting.
