Nadim Mahmud, MD, MS, MPH, MSCE is a transplant hepatologist and clinician-scientist at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania. His work focuses on improving outcomes for patients with cirrhosis and advanced liver disease through advanced analytics, risk prediction modeling, and pragmatic, data-driven clinical tools. He also plays a key role in resident research training and evidence-based medicine education. Dr. Mahmud’s research program leverages large national cohorts and electronic health record data to address high-risk decisions in cirrhosis, including perioperative risk assessment, portal hypertension, hepatic decompensation, and liver transplantation. He has led multiple large Veterans Health Administration cohort studies, including work refining and implementing the VOCAL-Penn surgical risk score and evaluating care pathways for complications such as acute-on-chronic liver failure and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and professional societies and has informed clinical practice guidelines and policy-relevant discussions on how best to deliver high-quality, equitable care for patients with liver disease, including Veterans.
