Susan Zickmund, PhD,  of the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP), a national Center of Innovation (COIN), recently chaired a VA HSR&D conference: “Increasing the Voice of the Veteran in VA Research.” The first day focused on Veteran engagement efforts by VA operational partners. Dr. Zickmund began the conference with the recommendations of the HSR&D Veteran Engagement Workgroup, which she chaired. She participated in a panel discussion with investigators, Veterans, and operational partners moderated by HSR&D's Director, David Atkins, MD, on future steps to best ensure Veteran engagement.  The second day was the VA HSR&D Centers of Innovation (COIN) Directors Conference. Dr. Zickmund presented a conceptual model as well as the recommendations for improved Veteran engagement in research.  She also conferred with Veteran Engagement members after the conference on short and long-term goals.  She is currently working with VA HSR&D on drafting the final recommendations.
